Breeding timeline

My shrimp arrived around three weeks ago, and seem to be doing well. The strange thing is, I bought 10, and there were definitely 10 to begin with, but now there are 12! Reading the information on this forum, I was expecting it to be far longer before any new shrimp might arrive. I haven't noticed any signs of eggs or larvae, but I wasn't really looking out for it. I did notice that one of the shrimp moulted about 10 days ago. I guess I don't really have a question, but I'd be curious to know how unusual this is. Is it possible that one of them arrived with eggs and the stress of travelling didn't cause any issues? Thanks in advance!

Hi @Dayvid Welcome to the forum! I'm not sure about the extra shrimp maybe there were more in the bag then you thought you had? These shrimp carry eggs for around 5 weeks before the eggs change into larvae and get released, they float around for about 15 days before the larvae become fully fledged shrimp.

Thanks! I've also wondered if I'm going mad ;) I counted them in the bag when they arrived, I'm certain there were 10. I must have counted them about 20 times yesterday, and I'm certain there are 12! It's a brand new tank, and the only other big living things in it are marimo moss balls and some Java fern. None of them look like larvae either.. but I'm sure there were 10 to begin with.. Is it possible some larvae were released almost immediately but I didn't notice them?

It may remain a mystery

What size are the smallest ones out of the 12? If you get time I’d love to see some photos of your setup and I’m sure others would like to see it too!

Ask the seller? Some sellers give extras in case of loss through shipping etc.

I'm sorry to go on about this, but the mystery continues! I noticed for the first time today that there are now 13! The smallest one is a bit less than 1 cm long, approximately 8 mm. As I mentioned, I counted them in the bag when they arrived and there were definitely originally 10. I'm wondering if there were some juveniles in the bag too, which I didn't notice because they were so small, but have now grown larger?

I'll upload some photos as soon as I manage to get some good ones.
Thanks for your comments.

Its possible you had very tiny tag alongs in the bag or some larvae from the breeder, when you see some larvae in your tank you will see how very small they start out and can judge their age from their sizes. Either way its exciting.

Sounds to me like extra shrimp from the seller. Lucky you! They're very hard to count. It couldn't be new babies because the size (8mm) you mentioned doesn't sound like it.
