It can't hurt to have 2 tanks, probably wouldn't use anything from your old tank though because of cross contamination. By the time your original tank is OK or you give up on it your new one will be ready... If the original one is OK after then you can have two tanks :)

Block the natural light and get some led lights for support of the algae you do wish to keep alive.
