new owner food confusion

New shrimp owner here. I have about 15-20 Opae Ula only in a 1 - 1/2 gal jar with lava rock, aragonite sand, marine salt/distilled water. Water quality is good (checked ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, salinity) and have had shrimp in there for about 6 weeks now. There is no sign of any algae growing that I can see. I have been giving them a toothpick end of spirulina powder once a week. When I do that, they all shoot up to the top and start swimming around the jar like crazy; so they look hungry. But I'm wondering how long I should do this as I've read so much about not over-feeding and some even indicating no need to feed. But when I do feed them they seem so excited - like they are starving! Should I continue to feed them once a week until I visually see algae or is it not necessary, or should I even be feeding them twice a week? Any advice is appreciated!

Small tooth pick amount once every 2 weeks will stop them starving.
